Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL)

Imagine! A technology which uses high intensity light that is able to correct a variety of benign, but unsightly skin conditions. There is no "down time" and only minimal discomfort to you.
Using various filters, the IPL can treats a variety of common and often annoying skin complaints such as rosacea, liverspots (lentigenes), and photodamage. Treatments may be enhanced with a topical medication called Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA). This medication, applied in the office, permits the light to penetrate more deeply and have a more profound effect. The use of ALA is determined by the nature of your skin condition.

Your skin is protected and your comfort assured with use of a chilled treatment head, and cooling gel applied at each session.
Treatments are usually scheduled at 2 - 4 weeks intervals, and take about 15-20 minutes. The type of skin condition, its' extent, and severity determine the number of treatments (usually 3 - 7).
Conditions commonly treated with the IPL include:
Rosacea. This condition often presents with red blotchy skin and enlarged, unsightlyblood vessels know as telangectasia.
Liver spots. Also known as lentigenes, present as brown, tan, or black spots on sun exposed areas such as the face, neck, chest, arms and hands.
Photodamage. This may present with liver spots, mottled discoloration of the skin, fine to medium wrinkling, dull skin color, and dryness.

How Does IPL Work?
A high intensity flash lamp provides polychromatic light with wavelengths extending from the visible spectrum into the infrared (560nm - 1200nm). Interchangeable treatment heads determine the exact wavelength used. The skin is protected with a combination of a chilled treatment head and a cooling gel. Some patients may also prefer to apply a topical anesthetic cream before each treatment for enhanced comfort.

The light passes into the skin and as it reaches the desired target, liverspots, broken and dilated blood vessels, wrinkles, and hair follicles converts to heat energy. The heat then eliminates them over a series of treatment sessions.
Dr. Robert Shoss and his staff provide pre and post treatment care and instructions.
